We are seeking an experienced and energetic practitioner to lead and manage the Department’s legal team and resources in the role of Chief Legal Adviser. Our vision to reduce re-offending by 25% by 2017 is an audacious but galvanising goal for all teams within the Department of Corrections. Our Chief Legal Adviser delivers solutions focused advice that enables us to achieve our goals and objectives and effectively manage legal risk. They act as the key adviser to the Chief Executive and Executive Team on any legal matters relating to the department or wider justice sector. They also provide advice to Government on legal risk relating to the management and handling of offenders, the impacts of proposed legislative changes and the application of Corrections legislation and regulations. 

To be successful in this role you must have sound professional judgement, be an excellent communicator and have strong relationship management skills. Prior experience in leading and managing a team of solicitors is essential along with a fundamental understanding of the machinery of government. You will appreciate the operational, cultural, political and social environment of the Department of Corrections and how it delivers services. You will also have the ability to identify the potential risks and flow-on effects arising from proposed decisions or actions, identify points of conflict and divergence and negotiate mutually acceptable solutions. 

The Chief Legal Adviser may represent the department at relevant forums as required including Select Committee, judicial hearings and coroner, parole board or court appearances. 

Public law and contract law experience is highly desirable. 

You must hold a current practising certificate.
